SC 1-13:  Impact of Individual Susceptibility and Previous Radiation Exposure on Radiation Risk for Astronauts

The Committee was organized to determine the impact of individual susceptibility and previous radiation exposure on the radiation risk for astronauts during space flight. The Committee held its first meeting in October 2003. A second meeting was held in January 2004 and a third meeting was held in April 2004. A fourth meeting was held on July 8-9, 2004. A fifth meeting was held October 21-22, 2004. The Committee conducted a conference call January 27, 2005. A sixth meeting of the Committee was held on June 28-30, 2005. A teleconference of all Committee members, the President of NCRP, and staff was held on May 2, 2006. Work continued on revisions of the draft report through the third quarter of 2007, and the draft has been sent to NCRP. Work by the Committee on references will continue and final preparation of the draft report for review by PAC 1 and Council is underway with support of supplemental funding received in May 2008 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A revised version of the draft report was prepared in response to comments from the PAC 1 review that commenced on October 18, 2008. Comments were tracked and reconciled during the revision process. References were updated and added. A revised draft report was submitted for Council review in January 2009. On February 13, 2009 the final comments from the Council review were received. A working group meeting was held in Bethesda on March 1, 2009 preceding the NCRP Annual Meeting.

The Committee is responding to comments received during Council review. A WebEx conference was held on October 9, 2009 focusing on the contingent comments as well as issues regarding Section 2 of the draft report on radiation exposures received by astronauts. A second WebEx conference was held on November 3, 2009 that focused on the ethics issues described in Section 7 of the draft report. A third WebEx conference was held on November 5, 2009 that focused on the biology and medicine issues associated with Sections 3 and 4 of the draft report. It is anticipated that a revision of the report that addresses the comments and suggestions for changes received from Council members will be completed during the first quarter of 2010.

At a working group meeting in Richland, Washington on January 30-31, 2010 all unresolved contingent comments were addressed. Responses were sent to all contingent commenters by the end of the first quarter of 2010. A revision of the draft report that addresses the comments and follow-on suggestions for changes will be completed during the second quarter of 2010.
