SC 1-15:  Radiation Protection and Science Goals for Short-Term Lunar Missions

The Committee is preparing a commentary on astronaut safety in future short-term missions to the moon. The major issues being addressed in this commentary are: (1) short-term and career dose limits for astronauts in lunar missions and (2) applications of ALARA in shielding designs for Earth-to-moon transfer vehicles, lunar habitats, and extravehicular activities in space or on the moon’s surface. The Committee held its first meeting on March 17-18, 2005 and a second meeting on May 14-15, 2005, in conjunction with a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) bioeffects contractors meeting in Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York. A third meeting of the Committee was held on November 17-18, 2005. At this meeting a detailed outline of the NCRP commentary on the NASA radiation safety plan for astronauts in lunar missions was developed. Writing assignments were made, and the schedule for drafting, reviewing and completing the commentary was prepared. Inputs to the draft commentary were due in January 2006. A fourth meeting of the Committee was held in Bethesda, Maryland on February 23-24, 2006, to review a first draft of the commentary and discuss the necessary revisions.

During the second quarter of 2006, members of the Committee provided revised text for a second draft of the commentary. Work on revision of the commentary was continued during the third and fourth quarters of 2006. A third draft was completed in the first quarter of 2007 and reviewed by the Committee in the second quarter of 2007. A fourth draft is being prepared for review by the Committee and advisors. Final preparation of the draft commentary for review by PAC 1 and Council is pending supplemental funding from NASA.
