SC 1-8: Risk to the Thyroid from Ionizing Radiation

The Committee is focusing on the incidence of benign and cancerous conditions of the thyroid and mortality risks from external irradiation and internal radiation exposures of the thyroid. The Committee is also reviewing dosimetry, molecular research, animal studies, human epidemiology, and modeling in addressing risk to the thyroid and parathyroid from ionizing radiation for adults and children, as well as medical evaluation and screening. The Committee's draft report is in the final stages of preparation. The Committee has nearly completed its responses to Council review, including report revision and compilation of responses for each reviewer. Publication of the report is expected in the fourth quarter.
